Decorating a child's room

When it comes to decorating a child's room the approach is different from decorating an adult bedroom. For children, their bedroom is not just a room for sleeping in but a room where they play games, read, listen to music, entertain friends, day-dream or just go to be alone sometimes. It is their only 'personal space' in the home and should reflect his or her personality and not yours. Here are some ways to help you create a space that will make you both happy.

- Sit down and talk with your child. Find out what activities and fantasies they enjoy, what their favourite colours are and what theme would suit their personality.

- Allow your child to help. Let them have a say on the colours, fabrics and how they to display their toys or collectibles.

- Consider different areas. Children use their room for many activities besides sleeping and it could have different zones such as a play area, reading area and entertainment area.

- Consider the importance of storage and make a list of your key requirements. There is a huge variety of shelving, wooden, wicker or plastic containers, pegs and hooks, cupboards and drawers available.

- Keep window dressings simple. Short curtains and blinds are more practical. Use a versatile fabric that can be used in other items such as bed linen, lampshades, headboards etc.

- Plan lighting options. Specific lights may be required for homework and reading, a soothing light for quieter times and a nightlight if required.

- Wallpaper or paint can add colour and texture to walls. Consider fun borders, clouds or stars on the ceiling and other themed looks. Make sure all paints and papers are washable.

- Consider a theme - princess or fairies, football, pirates, rainbows. underwater scenery, outer space, jungle theme, wizards, knights and dragons are just a few ideas.

Above all have fun, planning and decorating your child's bedroom is a great project that both your and your child can get involved in together.
